Geocaching documentary to make international debut in Swaziland festival

KINGDOM OF SWAZILAND, SOUTH AFRICA (Sept. 17, 2006) - Africa's premier showcase for short cinema today announced that Adventures in Geocaching has been selected to participate in the 2006 Golden Lion Film Festival. The documentary about the emerging game of high-tech treasure hunting and the unique characters involved in it will be screened at 1 p.m.Central African Time on Tuesday, Oct. 17 at the new U.S. Embassy auditorium in Mbabane.

The 2006 Golden Lion Film Festival takes place Oct. 14-28 and features the best of the world’s short film and video dramas, animation, documentaries, musicals and comedies. In its second year, the festival is expanding into South Africa and Mozambique, where special screenings will take place. Filmmakers from 43 nations on six continents submitted entries for this festival, totalling more than 200 entries.

"The Golden Lion Film Festival is all about filmmakers, not tourism or promoting a city or country for film production purposes," said Golden Lion Film Festival Director James Hall. " As a filmmaker myself, I welcome you in what we hope will be a long association, and the festival thanks you once again for participating with a superb production."

The Golden Lion Film Festival presents the latest accomplishments in short films and videos from Europe, North America, Africa and elsewhere in the world. All genres of shorts subjects are presented.

The aim of the festival is to overcome the limitations of commercial film distribution in the region, which is largely restricted to mainstream action adventure and special effects films, and to introduce innovative filmmakers to a new audience and the excitement of today’s Africa.

Prizes will be awarded for the top three films at the festival this year. The Jury Prize (Golden Lion Award) is $2,000. The Director’s Choice Award is $1,000. Finally, the Inkhanyeti (Silver Star) Award for Best Student Film is $500.

About Adventures in Geocaching
Adventures in Geocaching explores the emerging game of geocaching and the people who are involved in it. Geocaching – an Internet-based high-tech scavenger hunting game using Global Positioning System (GPS) devices – is new to many people, but to its avid participants, it’s a world of its own. This entertaining film tells the stories of three wildly different geocachers. Meet TRUROKR, a.k.a. John Noble, dedicated family man, animal lover and environmental activist who loves geocaching for the opportunities to visit new destinations. His local rivals, the Ventura Kids, a.k.a. Steve and Sandy, are the self-professed “bad guys” of geocaching. Ranked #3 in the world in total number of geocaching finds, Steve will do whatever it takes to find a cache and wastes no opportunity to remind people of his ranking.

Filling out the cast of characters is Aerospacecase, a.k.a. Brian O’Connell, for whom geocaching offers an escape from his clinical depression and helps him get back into life. These diverse characters allow the audience to uncover the mysterious appeal of searching for trinkets. Adventures in Geocaching is much more than an explanation of geocaching; it is a humorous, in-depth portrayal of four fascinating characters and their feelings about competition, community, and the search for the elusive Tupperware container. Adventures in Geocaching is directed by Nora Donaghy. For more information about the documentary, visit www.geocachingthemovie.com.
